One of the most important processes which has not been seriously taken into account in human resources management is the career path management. With regards to the present era, known as the knowledge economy era, knowledge and knowledge workers are of great significance. Hence, the issue being studied in the present study is the determination of importance of criteria affecting the career path of knowledge workers in both research and managerial groups; therefore, this study aims mainly at the prioritization of factors affecting the career path of knowledge workers of the Research Institute of Petroleum Industry. To prioritize the factors affecting the career path in this research, the fuzzy network analysis model with the nonlinear planning approach. Compared to the other prioritization methods, using this technique is because of assumptions that are more consistent with the real conditions of decision-making. Six factors were identified as the factors affecting the career path management of knowledge workers in this research. The results show that among the six main criteria studied in two knowledge workers, the orders of criteria influence on the career path are the same. The exclusive competencies have the highest level of importance in the career path of knowledge workers in both groups followed by the criteria of performance assessment, advantageous properties, training courses, working experience and education, respectively.

Ambiguity surrounding the concept of competency, as one of the basic concepts in human resource management, is a challenging issue that have been raised by many scholars. The aim of this article is to address this issue, reduce ambiguity of this concept and take steps towards clarifying this concept. For this purpose, conceptual analysis approach, proposed by Suddaby (2010), was used. According to this approach, by conducting four operations on a concept, it can be made clear: 1. providing a proper definition of the concept, 2. analyzing the space, time, and value scope of the concept, 3. demarcating the proposed concept by examining its relation with related concepts, and finally 4. analyzing and displaying logical consistency of the proposed concept and applying it in relevant theoretical frameworks. Based on this conceptual analysis approach, the paper first reviews past efforts made to clarify the concept of competency and then analyzes this concept according to each of the four pillars of conceptual clarification. Finally, a conceptual model is presented based on conducted analysis.
